Fr. George Bacopulos

Born: December 25, 1921
Died: May 12, 1999

Born in Decatur, Illinois, December 25 1921. Studied at Texas Tech, and graduated from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School. Served in Europe during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Married Evelyn Bardis of Keene, New Hampshire, in June 1946; parents of four children: John, Dorothy, Maria and Chris, and grandparents of Christine, George, and Alyse.

 

Served as Assistant Dean of the “Annunciation Cathedral”, Boston, MA. From 1951 to 1955; Acting Dean from 1955 to 1957. Pastor of Saints Constantine & Helen Church, Detroit, Michigan, from 1957 to 1960. Appointed Director of Inter-Church Relations of the Archdiocese in New York on May 1st 1960 and Associate Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York to 1962.

 

In his capacity of Director of Inter-Church Relations, he headed the office which maintains liaison between the Archdiocese and the National Council of Churches, World Council of Churches, non-Orthodox denominations and Orthodox jurisdictions of this hemisphere. Member of the General Board, National Council of Churches from 1960-1963, 1966-1969. General Policy and Strategy Committee, National Council of Churches; Director of the Commission of Chaplain Affairs of the Armed Forces and the VA of the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas; Study and Planning Commission of the Standing Conference; delegate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the Third Assembly of the World Council of Churches held in New Delhi, India, November-December 1961 and member of the Commission of Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches.

 

He served as Acting Chancellor of the Archdiocese from June to December 1963, and was appointed Chancellor on January 1964. He served in that position until he retired.
