Fr. Tryfon Theophilopoulos

Born: June 6, 1935
Died: October 2005

Born in Athens, Greece on June 6, 1935 to Konstantine and Eleni Theophilopoulos. Rev. Fr. Tryfon graduated from the University of High Industrial School of Greece and then went on to complete a year of graduate studies at the Organization and Administration at this same school. After completing his studies he served in the Greek Navy. In 1960, Fr. Tryfon arrived in the United States where he attended Holy Cross Theological Seminary in Brookline Massachusetts and received a BA in Theology. He married Helen Evangeline Likoudis on July 4, 1965 and was ordained as a deacon on September 19, 1965 and ordained as a priest on September 28, 1965 by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos. Fr. Tryfon served as Assistant Priest at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Hempstead, New York from 1965 to 1970, as Proistamenos at Holy Trinity, New Rochelle, NY from 1970 through 1973, as Proistamenos at Holy Cross Church, Brooklyn, NY from 1973 through 1975. Father Tryfon served the remainder of his calling at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs, Florida (1975 – 2005). Under his leadership and the support of his faithful parishioners, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was elevated to the status of a Cathedral. The Parish thrived though his pastoral guidance and spiritual leadership. He served the Cathedral with tireless devotion and ministered to the young and old as a man of God. He was named Economos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America in 1976, was honored by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1977, and was elevated to the officion of Protopresbyter of the Diocese of Atlanta in 1980. Although the honor of being titled a “Very Reverend” was bestowed upon Fr. Tryfon, he never used the title and upon his passing it was disclosed to his congregation, not to their surprise, as Fr. Tryfon was a simple, humble servant of our Lord. The idea for the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Parochial School was initiated by Fr. Tryfon and he was a member of the Board of Directors. Fr. Tryfon served as Dean of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral from 1975 – 2004 and as Dean Emeritus from 2004-2005. Fr. Tryfon served the faithful of Orthodox parishes around the U.S. for over 40 years. He was awarded the Athenagoras Medal for Music in 2005. Fr. Tryfon and Presvytera Helen are blessed with three children (a doctor, a lawyer and a dentist) and their spouses – Constantine and Ellyn, Gerasimos and Christina, Ekaterina and Marc. Fr. Tryfon has nine grandchildren – Joanna Maria, Tryfon Nicholas, Alexander Carmen, Andrew Michael, Maximos Joseph, Tryfon Gerasimos, Agape Eleni, Andreas Tryfon and Luc Michel. The passing of Fr. Tryfon has left a great void in the hearts of those who know him and loved him, but he leaves behind a legacy that will remain forever.
