Fr. George Neofotistos

Born: July 22, 1928
Died: August 22, 2006

George Neofotistos was born on July 22, 1928 in Lowell, Massachusetts to Peter and Eleni Neofotistos. He attended Pawtucket Elementary and Lowell High in Lowell, Massachusetts. His academic achievements include B.A. in Theology at Holy Cross in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1951. In 1965, he obtained his Masters in Education at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and his Ph.D. at Denver University, Iliff School of Theology.

On September 9, 1951, he married Veatriky Moungelis in Manchester, New Hampshire. Their children are Elaine & David Sinton, Mary and Tom Allen, Peter Neofotistos and Justin Neofotistos. Their three preĀ­cious grandchildren are Nathan Sinton, Rachel Allen and Alexander Allen.

Fr. George served as Deacon to Bishop Ezekiel of Nazianzos. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on September 29, 1951 by Bishop Demetrios of Olympus. Bishop Athenagoras Kokinakis bestowed the Omkion of Confessor to Fr. George in 1955 at Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.

A blessed ministry to our Holy Orthodox Church spanned over 43 years in the following parishes:

  • Annunciation, Pensacola, Florida, 1951-1954
  • Saint George, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1954-1956
  • Annunciation, Mobile, Alabama, 1956-1962
  • Saint John, Boston, Massachusetts, 1962-1964
  • Dean of Assumption Cathedral, Denver, Colorado,
  • 1964-1985 Director of St. Basil's Academy, September 1, 1985- June 30, 1987
  • Dean of St. Sophia Cathedral, Miami, Florida,
  • July 1, 1987-0ct. 30,1993 Director St. Basil's Academy, 1997-1999

Fr. George was also the great inspiration behind the building of the churches in Pensacola, Florida - Mobile, Alabama - and the Cathedral in Denver, Colorado.
