His Grace Bishop Philotheos

His Grace was born in the historic city of Constantinople on September 1st 1924. He was the oldest child of George Karamitsos and Lambrini Apostolidou.

He started his schooling at the Holy Trinity School at Pera, Turkey. From there he attended graduated from the famous Zographion High School. At this time in his life because of the political unrest, He moved to Greece. Coming to Greece he attended the Ecclesiastical School of Corinth and upon completing the course of study he attended and graduated the University of Athens Theological School.

July 30th 1950 he was ordained to the deaconate at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Athens.

He served as a deacon at the Church Saint Artemiis in Athens. In 1956 he was called to serve as a deacon to the Archbishop of Athens at the Metropolitan Church in Athens. In 1960 he came to America and served His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos as the Deacon for a year and a half.

On the 25th of July 1961 he was ordain to the priesthood and was assigned to serve the Annunciation Parish at Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1965 he was reassigned to the Parish of Saint Eleftherios in New York City. He not only served as its Pastor, but also was very involved in the Parochial School. He taught and developed a special bond will all the students.

On the ninth of April 1971, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate elected him to the third step of the Priesthood, Auxiliary Bishop of Meloa to serve under His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos. He was ordained on Pentecost Sunday the sixth of June 1971 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York.

As Bishop he represent His Eminence on the Cathedral Board, President of the Archdiocese Spiritual Court, Responsible for the Registry Department and sign affidavits on behalf of his Eminence, Represented the Archbishop at local Clergy and Philoptochos meetings. In the absence of a Bishop in the Chicago Diocese he served as the acting Bishop for thirteen months. He also assumed the duties of General Director of Saint Basil’s Academy.

In 1997 he retired after serving Archbishop Spyridon for over a year. Even though he has retired, he still serves the Archdiocese representing His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios by presiding over Services, meetings, social gatherings and in any way he can be of service to the Archdiocese.

His Grace resides in Fort Lee New Jersey with his sister Elizabeth Karamitsos. He has also a younger sister named Maro married to Teddy Manesis. They have a son named Andreas.

His Grace has served and continues to serve the Church of America since 1960 as a Deacon, a Priest and as a Bishop.
