Fr. Elias Scoulas

HUNTINGTON, WV - Fr. Elias Scoulas, retired pastor of St. John's Church in Charleston, WV, died Sept. 12. He was 85 and had been retired since June 2014.

He was born Dec. 10, 1929 in Miami, Fla., and his family moved to Chicago when he was a boy. After graduating from high school in Chicago he attended the University of Chicago and received a BA. degree in philosophy. He then enrolled at Holy Cross School of Theology and earned a Master's of Divinity. He also received an MA. degree in education from Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ

He was married to Lucille Ann Cristy (Chrysostornos) in July 1981. They had two children, George and Angela. He was ordained as a deacon in February 1982 in
Modesto, Calif., by Bishop Anthony of San Francisco. In March 1982, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John of Atlanta.

Fr. Scoulas served the parishes of St. Nicholas in Spartanburg, SC (March 1982 to October 1985), HolyCross-Sts. Constantine and Helen in Huntsville, AL. (November 1985 to September 1988); Sts. Constantine and Helen, Fayetteville, N.C. (September 1988 to November 1990); Annunciation in Little Rock, Ark. (January 1991 to November 1998); Holy Trinity, Bluff City, Tenn. (November 1998 to February 2006); and St. John's in Charleston (February 2006 to May 2014).

Funeral services took place Sept. 15 at St. George Church, Huntington, with Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh officiating, assisted by Chancellor Fr. George Callos, former St. George priest Fr. Frank Milanese, Fr. Matthew Moore of St. John in Charleston and other clergy.
