Fr. Dean Paul Talagan

Father Constantine Apostolos Talagan was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on October 23, 1933, the son of Apostolos and Anastasia Talagan. Public School education was completed in Cheyenne. In 1951 Fr. Dean attended Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts for three years. He then transferred to the University of Wyoming receiving a bachelor's degree in Classical Greek and History. Another year was spent preparing to teach in the public schools. Next, Father and Presbytera moved to the University of Northern Colorado where Father earned a master's degree in History and Education. From there he taught at South High School in Bakersfield, California. Upon returning to Cheyenne, he continued teaching and earned a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Administration and Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. In 1982 he returned to Holy Cross where he wrote papers in five subjects, for a Master of Theological Studies degree and attended numerous lectures. All this was possible due to the fact that Presbytera Argie taught in the public schools for 24 years.

Father Dean and his Presvytera to be, Argie (Argyro) Lafkas, were married in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on July 22, 1956, in their home parish of Saints Constantine and Helen in Cheyenne. God blessed them with two children:

Stacie Ann and Paul Dean. Stacie and her husband, Marcus Wade, live in Sugar Land, Texas. Both are graduates of the University of Wyoming. Stacie received a master's degree from that institution. Marcus is the International Manager for Marathon Oil. They are the proud parents of Angela Catherine Wade who graduated from Yale in 2007, and Miles Nicholas Wade who attended Texas A & M University. Paul is a graduate of Colorado State University in Ft. Collions, Colorado, Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline. Paul and his wife Kristi are blessed with a daughter Barbara Argyro Talagan. They live in Saugus, Massachusetts. Paul is a psychologist and his wife Kristi is a Vice-principal in a high school. Father and Presbytera thank God for the joy of their children and three grandchildren.

Father served his home parish of Saints Constantine and Helen in Cheyenne, Wyoming for ten years. During that time he started the Patriarch Athenagoras National Retreat Center at Harriman, Wyoming. Youth came from both coasts and many states to learn about the depth and magnificence of the Greek Orthodox Faith. Under the spiritual direction of Bishops John, Anthimos, Anthony, Kallistos, and Isaiah, young people became excited about their faith. Fifty-nine campers later became priests of the Archdiocese of America. One counselor, at the Center, is now the Metropolitan of South America with headquarters in Argentina. Numerous young women are now presvyteres who met their future spouses at the Retreat Center. His Eminence Archbishop lakovos dedicated the Retreat Center and later consecrated the beautiful little chapel of the Holy Saints Anargyroi, Cosmas and Damian, on the center grounds. The idea of a center for youth was given to Fr. Dean's father, Apostolos, in the 1930's by then Archbishop Athenagoras who consecrated the local church. Father passed this on to his son and Father Dean told a friend on a ski lift at Vail about it. The friend was excited and a three member board took off under the guidance of Archbishop lakovos and Father Alexander Karloutsos, and built the center.

In 1984, Father and Presbytera left Cheyenne and helped build a new community in Denver, Colorado. A new edifice was erected in 1990 in the Denver Tech Center. The Church was named after Saint Catherine the brilliant great martyr of Alexandria, who is the protector of the monastery that bears her name on Mt. Sinai. While serving the Denver community, Father also served as Vice-President and then President of the Colorado Council of Churches. His talks about Orthodoxy were given in various Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches throughout Colorado. While in Denver, he completed the requirements for certification as a Pastoral Psychotherapist, certified by the American Association of Pastoral Counselors in Washington, D. C.

Father served on the National Education taskforce of the Department of Religious Education for many years. Various pamphlets and booklets were developed such as: "The Introduction to Orthodox Prayer". A book on Orthodox Counseling following a lecture delivered with Dr. John Chirban at Holy Cross. A pamphlet called "Thy Will Be Done" and others were written. Father lectured at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver and at St. John's University in Minnesota, and Regis College in Denver among others, on the gift of Orthodox Christianity through the Ages. He taught comparative religions at the Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne fpr seven years. He was one of the founders of the Community College while serving as Assistant State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Wyoming, prior to entering the Lord's Sacred Priesthood. One of his favorite workshops was given in Dallas, Texas on Orthodox Christian Marriage Enrichment. Father also worked for Leadership 100 for two years raising funds. In everything, Father Dean and Presbytera Argie bless the name of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ for His many gifts and blessings in their life together as partners serving the Lord and His Most Holy and Magnificent Orthodox Church.
